Minnesota vs. Seattle Game Recap
Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Kevin Slowey threw eight shutout innings to
outduel Seattle's Felix Hernandez and keep the Twins rolling in a 4-0 victory.
Slowey (10-5) gave up three hits, struck out five and didn't walk a batter to
pitch Minnesota to its seventh consecutive win.
"I had multiple pitches that I was able to throw for strikes," Slowey said.
"That was a big thing for me tonight."
Joe Mauer had three hits, scored twice and had an RBI, while Delmon Young
tripled and drove in a pair for the victors.
Hernandez (7-8) went seven innings and allowed three runs -- all in the first
frame -- on a total of seven hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts. The
Mariners have dropped six straight overall.
Three straight hitters followed Alexi Casilla's one-out triple in the first
frame with run-scoring hits. Mauer's single preceded Young's three-bagger to
right, and Jim Thome made it a 3-0 game with a double to left.
Slowey retired 12 straight after Casey Kotchman's two-out single in the
opening frame, then sat down seven in a row following Josh Bard's two-out
double in the fifth.
Michael Saunders was stranded at second after his leadoff double in the top of
the eighth, and the Twins tacked on an insurance run off Jamey Wright in the
bottom half via Young's RBI base hit back through the middle.
Twins reliever Jose Mijares finished off the shutout in the ninth.
"I can't describe what's going on right now. We're not winning many ball
games," Saunders said. "We have to look forward...and stay positive."
