OGDEN, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Ogden Police detectives say it’s only a matter of time before an arrest is made in a cold case that’s dogged them for two and a half years.
In October 2008, 47-year-old machinist Jeffery Bancroft was shot as he drove his Honda back to work from a meal break.
Detectives say they’ve found the gun that might have killed him and they have a suspect in mind.
Bancroft’s adult sons tell ABC4 this person needs to be caught, but they’re not celebrating yet.
"It’s a possible suspect, so we’re trying not to get our hopes up too much," said 25-Year-old Kurtis Bancroft.
The last 30 months has been agonizing for Kurtis, not knowing who shot his dad, his best friend, or why, after he left a fast food place after three in the morning October 24, 2008.
"I haven’t gone fishing since. Just everything. We just miss him," said Kurtis’ older brother Justin, who is also living a dark dream, wondering if the murder was a carjacking, or payback for some unknown story.
"It’s terrible. Everyday you wake up there’s just kind of like, a void…just wondering what happened, you know what I mean, why did it happen. You know no one has the answers," said Justin.
Detectives do know this: moments after Jeffrey Bancroft paid for that meal, his car crashed outside the Trax-air Building on Odgen’s Wall Avenue. At first, firefighters thought it was an accident until police discovered the 47 year-old was dead before his car came to a stop.
"We’re looking for somebody that would have been in the roadway at the time Mr. Bancroft was shot," said Ogden Police Detective Tim Scott.
Police say they’ve re-interviewed five people, which has resulted in the identification of their suspect.
So, the waiting may be finally over, prompting these words to the murderer from Bancroft’s younger surviving son.
"You’re a coward, and that person doesn’t deserve another day of freedom as far as I’m concerned," said Kurtis Bancroft.
That weapon police found is undergoing ballistics tests at Utah’s state crime lab. Results are due back within a month. ABC 4 will let you know what they reveal.
