SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - You may get a ticket near UTA TRAX lines.

A staggering 39 crashes and eight deaths since the beginning of 2012 prompted the Utah Transit Authority to crack down on distracted pedestrians. Officers can give $50 tickets to anyone caught crossing a TRAX line while talking on a phone, texting or with ear buds in their ears.

Our ABC 4 camera capture people crossing the TRAX a line in downtown Salt Lake City after only waiting in place for five minutes.

A pedestrian was killed in South Salt Lake City last year because he was texting as he crossed the line.
