RICHFIELD, Utah (AP) - Officials say a snowmobiler has died in an avalanche near central Utah's Fish Lake.
Forecaster Brett Kobernik of the Utah Avalanche Center says a group of four snowmobilers triggered the slab avalanche about 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon.
At least one man was caught in the slide and buried about 4 feet deep.
The man's companions were able to find him with the help of an avalanche transceiver, which transmits a radio signal to help find people buried under snow. It's unclear whether the man was still alive when he was found.
Kobernik says Utah has an unusually unstable snowpack this year. The death marks the third avalanche fatality in Utah this winter.
Fish Lake is located in Sevier County. The Sevier County Sheriff has not yet released further details.
