Understandably there isn’t enough good and fun movies we can share with our kids these days, and to be sure the time between the “good” ones sometimes seem like a long time.
And, although it’s an easy task to tear apart a film like “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island,” I am not going to take that road.
“Journey 2” is the sequel to 2008’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth” that starred Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson.
In this new adventure Hutcherson returns as Sean Anderson and Brendan Fraser is replaced by Dwayne Johnson (The Rock). The two go off on the quest to find Jules Verne’s “Mysterious Island” and to find Sean’s long lost grandfather played by Michael Caine.
The film is a well-done family adventure, albeit silly and in places, but the film does have a sense of itself and offers up some pretty nice 3D action with most of the film’s comedy supplied by Luis Guzman, who plays a helicopter pilot.
There is a bit of puppy love that brews between Hutcherson’s character and Vanessa Hudgens, who plays Guzman’s no-nonsense daughter. But that romance is contained to longing looks and Hutcherson mumbling and being tongue-tied.
All in all “Journey 2” is worth taking the kids to see.
It gets a B and is rated PG.
