February's Last Winter Stand

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A powerful and major winter storm will affect much of the state of Utah into Friday but this time it looks to be an all snow event. Cold air behind the initial cold front will create winter driving conditions throughout all of Northern and Central Utah. Winter Storm Warnings are in affect through 11am Friday for the Wasatch Front and Northern Utah and Central mountains.

Winter Weather Advisories are also posted along the I-15 corridor and the Great Salt Lake Desert as accumulating snow could make travel treacherous over the mountain passes and through the canyons. The Northern mountains of Utah can expect snowfall totals anywhere between 1 and 3 feet by the time things taper off Friday. This storm carries two big punches with it. The first punch will start later Wednesday evening with snowfall heavy at times. The second punch will arrive for the Thursday evening commute and last through the overnight hours.

This storm has the potential of dropping up to a foot of snow along the benches and mountain valleys and up to 6 inches along much of the valley floors. Central Utah will see sno accumulations of 2-4 inches while Southern Utah should see intermittent rain showers.

Expect greater snowfall totals in areas favorable to Lake Effect snow as the cold winds will blow over the warmer waters of the Great Salt Lake to add on to the already accumulated snow. Use extra caution driving as road conditions will continue to diminish later Wednesday evening and then again later Thuursday evening and visability lowers.
