HERRIMAN, Utah (ABC 4 News) - All hands were on deck Friday night for the ten-alarm fire in Herriman. Local crews were first to arrive on the scene, but the Rose Crest fire soon grew beyond their capabilities.
Unified Fire Department Chief Michael Jensen said, "We had six alarms come down and now we're well up over ten alarms and calling in more reserves."
The amount of alarms called correlate with the number of fire crews and equipment that's needed to fight the fire.
"It would be fair to say every jurisdiction in the Salt Lake valley has sent crews and those surrounding neighboring counties hat have available resources have sent crews as well," said Jensen.
The exact number of fire apparatus is unknown at this time.
The best estimate Chief Jensen could give was more than 50 trucks and tankers. Even crews that were fighting the Wood Hallow fire were called to help fight the Rose Crest fire.
One strike team made up of four engines was called in to help protect the structures.
Paramedic Craig Ellingson said, "Our job is to just pull up next to the structures, pull hose line around it and protect it from fire."
At the time of this publishing 3 homes were lost as well as several barns, garages and outdoor structures. More than 350 acres burned.
Crews will be out fighting the fire through the night and into Saturday and likely putting out hot spots for the next 72 hours.
As of Saturday evening, all evacuations have been lifted.
