SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A 28-year-old man has been charged in the stabbing of a Salt Lake City criminal defense lawyer at the attorney's house.

Prosecutors are charging Matthew Wall with attempted murder, aggravated burglary and two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person. He faces up to life in prison if he's convicted.

Attorney Steven Killpack told police he woke up July 5 to find a man in his house disconnecting wires from his computer. He said he confronted the intruder, who then attacked him.

Wall told police he entered the home and slept there before getting into a fight with a man who was upset that his paintings were disturbed.

Killpack is a former federal public defender who's now in private practice. He survived several stab wounds.
