SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A father is in jail after police say he tried to kill his mentally handicapped son.

Police arrested Michael Martin who is now charged with second degree felony attempted murder.

On Christmas day, court records show there was an argument in the Martin home. Then Martin allegedly gave his 30 year old son 10 Trazadone pills “to end it all.”

But prosecutors also say Martin tried to take his own life. Court documents say Martin also took 10 Trazadone pills plus 5 Temazepam pills and he mixed it with Nyquil.

When he allegedly botched the murder-suicide he drove himself and his son to the hospital.

When asked why he went to the hospital, court documents say the defendant stated “because it didn’t work.”
