SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Utah drivers are able to express themselves in a variety of ways through decals on their license plates: Utah, BYU, hunting, fishing, military veteran, low emissions vehicle, and on and on. And soon, allegiance to God may become yet another option.
The Utah House approved a bill (
HB 0034) on Monday which would create a new license plate decal which reads, "In God We Trust."
Rep. Val Peterson (R-Orem), who sponsored the bill, said the new option gives Utah drivers a way to express themselves spiritually. Monday, the House approved the bill by a vote of 64-9.
Rep. Johnny Anderson (R-Taylorsville) was among those who opposed the bill, and said the state's license plate system should not be used for fundraising. It would cost drivers an additional $25 to receive the faith-based plates, and the proceeds would go to support America's Freedom Festival -- a Provo-based organization that promotes family values, freedom, patriotism, and Christianity. America's Freedom Festival operates two major events in Utah every year: the "Stadium of Fire" concert and fireworks show, and the Grand Parade in Provo.
