SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Cancelled flights and overbooked hotel rooms are forcing a number of travelers to spend the night at the Salt Lake Airport.
Some passengers could have a rough night ahead.
"There's a chance you could get stuck here tonight?" asked Reporter Brian Carlson.
"Yes," said Chad Gutib, flying from Hawaii.
"Hopefully my flight goes through or I'm sleeping here tonight," said Ryan Sattler, expecting to fly out Thursday.
Thursday icy runways at the Salt Lake Airport delayed and cancelled so many flights, early estimates showed as many as 6,000- 7,000 people may have become stuck with no where to go.
"Nothing, no airport hotels, nothing downtown, everyone is saying you should go to Sandy, which is somewhere far away," said Michele Turnure-Salleo, flying to San Francisco.
To avoid sleeping on an airport bench Turnure-Salleo bought a train ticket home.
"When I rang up Amtrak they said we can give you a sleeper compartment, three meals, it leaves at midnight and you'll be in San Francisco by the afternoon," said Turnure-Salleo.
One traveller concerned about his flight situation booked a hotel just in case.
"I had to cancel by 6:00 p.m. or pay for the room, so I cancelled the hotel. Then I got the jitters, so I called back three minutes later and it was already booked," said Sattler.
Right now so many hotels are booked for Sundance or the Outdoor Retailer show are limited.
"We sort of knew looking at the websites that there wasn't much available," said Jeff Smith, flying to Las Vegas.
Some have no idea where they're going to sleep.
"You have no idea what's going to happen next?" Carlson asked.
"I have no idea what's going to happen next," said Gutib.
It's important to note, by early Thursday evening the Salt Lake Airport began to catch up on the scores of delayed and cancelled flights. Although it's uncertain how many travelers became stranded Thursday night, because of improved flight conditions, the number of stuck travelers are expected to be less than originally thought.
