VATICAN CITY (ABC 4 News) - The Vatican has confirmed Monday morning that Pope Benedict XVI will resign due to health concerns.

The pope's decision makes him the first pontiff to resign in over 500 years.

Pope Gregory XII was the last pope to resign back in 1415.

A new pope is expected to be elected by the end of March.
