SALT LAKE (ABC 4 News) – Smith's Food & Drug Stores management announced Wednesday the grocery chain will not sell aerial fireworks, recently approved for sale in Utah, in all 47 Utah stores this summer.
Marsha Gilford, a spokeswoman for Smith’s, said the colorful explosives may pose a potential fire hazard.
“We were concerned with the fire danger throughout the entire state,” Gilford said. “With the light snowpack and the extreme conditions, from our perspective it was in the best interest of the community to not sell aerial fireworks.”
Smith's stores will continue to carry the traditional "safe and sane" packaged variety fireworks that remain low to the ground in its stores.
Aerial fireworks may be sold in tents located in Smith's store parking lots, which are leased to another company and not controlled by Smith's.
The Salt Lake City Fire Department said the decision will likely help prevent future fires or accidents from occurring.
“To see Smith’s stand up to this issue right now and show support of the fire service, that means a lot,” Fire Chief Kurt Cook said.
Cook said the Fire Marshal’s Office just released the firework restricted areas for the summer season.
