Regents: Students need to pick major, pursue goal

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah State Board of Regents has approved a new policy allowing universities to charge students more for credits they accumulate beyond those needed to graduate without earning a college degree.

Currently, students pay a surcharge of double the current tuition rate when the accumulate credits hours exceeding 135 percent of the number of credit hours needed to graduate. The new policy reduces the threshold to 125 percent.

Commissioner of Higher Education Dave Buhler said in a statement Monday that the board wants to encourage students to focus their efforts, decide on a major and move toward that goal.

Utah's goal is to have 66 percent of adults with a higher education credential by the year 2020.
