SANDY, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Police made a rare discovery Tuesday inside a home in Sandy, they came there looking for drugs, and they discovered a distillery making a strong smelling bubbly brew.

“Moonshiners”, you've probably seen them on TV. It's people who break the law, making homemade alcohol. In an exclusive interview with ABC 4, Sandy police said they're seeing the same thing.

"ATF said this is probably the first distillery that's been seized since the prohibition," said Sgt. Jon Arnold, Sandy Police Dept.

Tuesday night the SWAT team went to a home in Sandy off 107th South to arrest 31 year old Derek Ouimet and 33 year old Jeremy Hiatt for possession of meth, but when police looked in the basement they found a moonshine making machine.

"One of these kegs was where they were actually making the items," said Arnold.

It's just like Hawkeye Pierce the hit TV show M*A*S*H. Police said Hiatt and Ouimet where using kegs and copper tubes to make homemade hard liquor.

"They were making moonshine," Arnold said.

Police said it's something they've never seen before. YouTube videos may make it look easy. But police said you shouldn't do it.

"You can't distill alcohol in any quantity without a license," said Arnold.

So if you see the distillery like the one from Sandy and have the urge to make a little hooch yourself, you may want to just to leave it to the professionals. Police said the two men arrested were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for possession of drugs, and a working distillery.
