MORGAN, Utah (AP) - Authorities have identified a Utah pilot dead after the single-engine plane he was piloting crashed in a rural area of Morgan County.

The Morgan County Sheriff's Office says 50-year-old Darren Tidwell of Huntsville was the sole occupant of a plane that took off from the Morgan County Airport at 6:30 a.m. Thursday en route to Logan.

Deputy Tyler Grose says the man's family began searching when his plane didn't arrive and spotted his craft in a remote area about five miles north of the airport.

Grose says Tidwell was an experienced pilot who flew in the military and as a civilian.

The FAA and the NTSB will investigate the crash.
