SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Armed robberies are popping up all over the Wasatch front.
According to Salt Lake City Police, a woman armed with a handgun allegedly robbed the Yogurt Stop on 21st South and 21st East in Sugarhouse.
Ashley Jewel, a Yogurt Stop employee, told ABC 4 News reporter Cristina Rendon that the woman made small talk and asked questions about the menu. The woman grabbed a yogurt and asked for a bag to go.
“Instead of paying she just pulled out a gun and told me to put all the money in the bag,” Jewel said.
Police said they did not get a good description on the woman from Jewel because she was bundled up from head to toe in winter clothing.
This is the second robbery in one week at a yogurt shop in Sugarhouse.
A man walked into the Red Mango last week. He too ordered a yogurt before he pulled out a gun, demanded cash and walked out of the store.
Salt Lake Police said robberies appear to be on the rise, but not for any specific reason. ABC 4 News was told small businesses are more likely to be hit than banks.
On Dec. 31 a man and woman walked into a Payless Shoe Source in West Valley City. An employee told police the woman was stealing shoes, but the man flashed a gun in his waist band and the two got away.
Jewel said it is scary to think about crimes happening in places people do not expect.
“I thought I was safe coming to work,” she said. “Now I’m not so sure.”
In the past month, there have been over 25 reported robberies stretching from Ogden to Provo.
