WOODS CROSS Utah (ABC 4 News) – A future rate hike may be the only solution for this city’s water problems.
That’s what the city council is now considering after shutting down two more water wells.
Since 1988, the city has lived with a large plum filled with contaminants causing it to shutdown four water wells. They’re now down to its last water well.
“The concern is that the plume of contaminants will be pulled into the well and it will have PCE in it.,” say Ken Parry, Woods Cross mayor..
Despite having Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) in the water supply, city officials say their drinking water is free of contaminants.
“We’d still be under governments regulations as far as the allowable PCE in the water system,” says Parry. “But the question is whether residents are concerned enough of PCE to eliminate it completely.’
That’s why the city is considering raising rates by ten dollars a month to permanently purify the drinking water.
He says the city has hosted public hearings and held open houses but there doesn’t seem to be much interest in the public.
“There’ over 9,800 people here and so far we’ve only had 27 responses,” Parry says.
But he says the city plans an all out blitz in the coming months to see if residents will agree or oppose the proposed rate hike.
