SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - If you're planning on joining the crowds of holiday travelers flying Wednesday you might be in for some big delays.
"Our flight was supposed to leave in Madison, WI at 9:30 a.m. but it didn't leave until 4:30 p.m.," said Casie Wilcox, flying into Salt Lake City.
"So I missed my connection here in Salt Lake City and had to wait another 7 hours," said Valerie Clark, traveling from Casper, WY.
"I've had to sit in the airport for the last 10 hours," said Laura Louis, flying to Indiana.
Holiday horror stories like these happening across the country. So far more than 1,300 flights have been cancelled, others were pushed for back for hours at a time - all due to Wednesday's snowy winter blast.
ABC 4 Reporter Brian Carlson spoke to several people at the Salt Lake Airport who said the storm screwed up their holiday plans.
"I had to reschedule plans with my family," said Louis.
"I'm missing my Christmas with my kids, we were supposed to have Christmas tonight," said Clark.
"How frustrating is that?" Carlson asked.
"I'm a little frustrated, it's kind of been frustrating," Clark said.
That frustration is even spilling over into the cockpit. One American Airlines pilot was clearly fed up. After waiting for 5 hours to take off he told this to his passengers -
"It's beyond reproach. I have no words to tell you how sorry I am for all of this. Decisions are being made way above our heads by people that obviously, in my humble opinion, don't have a clue what they're doing," said the pilot.
Although those who've been delayed are clearly irritated, they're still trying to keep a smile on their faces.
"What can you do?" Clark said.
"I just kind of roll with it," said Louis.
"We're just glad to be home," said Wilcox.
ABC 4 is told the Salt Lake Airport is experiencing significantly less delays than airports back east. As of 9:45 p.m. airports from Philadelphia to New York City were experiencing 2 to 4 hour delays. Select arrivals from those eastern cities into Salt Lake City are delayed by roughly one hour. Some departures from Salt Lake City going back east have been delayed as well.
