OREM, Utah (AP) - Utah Valley University officials say a $1 million donation to the school's childcare center will help make it easier for Utah women to get a degree.
UVU President Matthew Holland announced this week that Barbara Barrington Jones donated $1 million to the Wee Care Center on the Orem campus.
The center was founded in 2001 but quickly reached its capacity of 60 children.
Holland says a project to expand the center will provide more affordable childcare and remove one of the most significant barriers Utah women face as they pursue higher education.
Utah lags behind other states in the number of women enrolled in college.
Jones says she knows what it's like to be a single mother and thought the center was the right place for her gift.
