Two snowmobilers are safe at home after being stuck on a mountain in Davis County for nearly 24 hours. The father and son were rescued Thursday evening, not by rescue crews, but by complete strangers who just showed up to help.
Davis County rescue crews began searching Thursday afternoon, even launching the helicopter over the area. Then, a father and son saw the story on the news and came to help. About an hour later, the pair came down the mountain with Cole and Robert Sutton.
After spending an entire night on a freezing cold mountain, 15 year old Cole was in surprisingly good spirits.
"well, I’m like superman, so I survive anything,” he said laughing.
The Suttons were snowmobiling up here Wednesday when they got stuck in a meadow, and couldn't get out.
"Well we couldn't see because the clouds came in so fast from the storm yesterday," Cole said.
As the sun went down, the cold set in. Cole said he and his dad got some bonding time overnight. But it was mainly out of necessity.
"It was cold and my feet were freezing but my dad saved them, he rubbed them all night and kept them warm," he said.
As the temperature continued to drop, the men went to even more extreme measures to stay warm.
"At one point this morning it was so cold we lit a snowmobile on fire and used that as a heat source," Cole said.
As the Suttons struggled to stay warm, crews were working hard to find them, including Kevin Sundh and his son. After hearing about the search, Kevin contacted the sheriff.
"I told him I know the area really well cause I ride it so much and asked if we could volunteer to come up here and help and search," Kevin said.
That knowledge of the mountain paid off. After just an hour, Kevin and his son spotted the Sutton’s, scooped them up, and brought them down.
After everything, Cole said he wants to hop on a snowmobile again Friday, but his grandmother, Barbara Selleneit had other plans.
"No we have a flight tomorrow and you're going to be on it, your mother is waiting at the airport,” she said.
Cole lives in San Diego with his mother. He was in Utah visiting his dad. Even after a night in the snow, both men are just fine.
