SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A new court date has been set for a Burmese refugee charged with beating a 7-year-old neighbor to death in Utah.
A 3rd District Court judge said Monday that an order would be filed soon to deal with ongoing interpreter issues in 25-year-old Esar Met's case. The Deseret News reports the court needs two Burmese-speaking translators, another who speaks the Karen language, and another who speaks Spanish.
A June hearing was cancelled after defense lawyers complained interpreters weren't up to court standards.
The preliminary hearing is now set to begin Nov. 7.
Police say they found the body of Hser Ner Moo, another Burmese refugee, inside Met's South Salt Lake apartment a day after she was reported missing four years ago.
Met has denied charges of aggravated murder and kidnapping.
