SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The fight in David Ward seemed to disappear after police placed him in squad car.
It had been a different Ward who was driving his three children home.
But he ran off the road in Olympus Cove and high-centered his SUV a few blocks from his home.
Police say he lost control outside T.J. Nagy's home.
“(I) heard a huge explosion and snow was in the air through my front window and I see a green (SUV) explorer on my concrete retaining wall,” says Nagy.
Nagy walked out and saw three toddlers in the back seat. He says they were not hurt and still in their car seats.
Ward allegedly blamed it on the kids who distracted him.
“He said the) three kids in the back, chocolate milk, looking back to make sure something didn't spill,” says Nagy.
Nagy says the kids are okay and gives them a ride home a few blocks away.
“He was completely coherent, stunned from the accident," says Nagy.
But when police came to Ward's house to fill out an accident report they claimed he was in a fighting mood.
“He assaulted our officers and attempted to take a taser from one of our officers,” says Lt. Justin Hoyal.
Ward was arrested and placed inside a police car.
Unified Police also removed the three children from the house after allegedly seeing evidence of a meth lab in the home.
“Right now we have three young kids in our custody (there’s) a three year old and one year old twins,” says Lt. Hoyal.
A hazardous material team was called into to inventory the scene and decontaminate the kids and Ward.
All this caught Nagy off guard after ABC4 News told him what police allegedly found at Ward's home.
“That bothers me and blows me away,” says Nagy. “This guy whose got a (bumper) sticker in the car that says ‘it's never okay to hurt a child’ if they really found meth in that house that's the veneer he's got going on.”
