SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A jury has convicted a 43-year-old Salt Lake City man of manslaughter after police say he put his girlfriend in a fatal chokehold last April.
Prosecutors had been seeking a murder conviction against Todd Eugene Anderson in the death of 39-year-old Jennifer Schubach. But jurors came back with the lesser verdict on Thursday.
Anderson faces one to 15 years in prison at sentencing Aug. 10.
Anderson's attorney, Nick Falcone, said the couple had been fighting and his client used a submission hold he saw on TV in an attempt to make her quiet. He argued Anderson loved his girlfriend and had no intention of killing her.
Schubach was found dead in her apartment. A coroner determined she died of strangulation, but also had toxic levels of amphetamines in her system.
