For millions of Americans, a new year means a new diet. But a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association may have you re-thinking your plans to slim down.
Simply put, it says being a little overweight may help you live longer! That's right, longer!
At Crossfit Great Salt Lake we found people lifting weights to drop the pounds. Dave Koncar has been a member since April 2011, and has lost a whopping 50 pounds!
"My overall energy and strength, I can tell a huge difference," Koncar said.
But this new study claims being in great shape, may not help you live longer. Actually, it says people who are a little overweight have less risk of dying!
Doctor David Jack with St. Mark’s weight loss said those who ate too much this holiday season shouldn't get excited just yet.
"The study indeed confirms studies we've seen before that people who are just a little overweight don't die earlier, but remember death's not the only marker of health," Jack said.
He said an overall marker of health is how much you enjoy life. He also said make sure your weight doesn't affect, or cause, any other medical conditions. The article goes on to explain; a little extra fat can be protective if you get sick and lose weight. It also said weight gain on your hips is good while on the stomach is bad. Doctor Jack just fears where a study like this could end up.
"An article like this kind of gives license to people to be a little over weight and point of fact that's probably a little protective but a little overweight leads to a lot overweight, which leads to obesity,” he said.
After losing 50 pounds, Koncar said he has found a better lifestyle and no matter what this new study says, he's not changing.
"Study or no study I’m going to keep trying to get healthier and healthier," he said.
