SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Organizers of the Super Pet Adoption are hoping to find homes for 800 homeless cats and dogs this weekend.
The adoption is a three day event that runs from Friday, October 5 through Sunday, October 7. The event, sponsored by PetSmart Charities and Best Friends Animal Society is being held in the parking lot of the PetSmart at 389 West 1830 South.
Tamma Martin with Best Friends Animal Society says they have dozens of small breed and purebred dogs and puppies. Their goal is to get pet parents to avoid purchasing from pet shop or online retailers - which supports the puppy mill industry.
30-thousand animals are euthanized in Utah every year, according to Martin, but events like the super adoption help to keep euthanization numbers down.
The cats and dogs come from all over Utah, from as far north as Davis County, and as far south as Kanab.
Dog adoptions are $75 and cats are $25. All pets are spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Martin says many of them are already microchipped as well.
Pet volunteers will be on hand to help potential owners select the right cat or dog to fit their lifestyle.
Those who aren't able to stop by the pet adoption in person can log onto www.petfinder.com
where many of the animals up for adoption will be featured.
