Winter Running

Winter is here!! It is cold, it is dark and it is sometimes wet. It is the kind of weather where you want to snuggle in a blanket by the fire all day! During this time, most people turn to the Treadmill…or as referred to as the Dreadmill! Winter running can be fun and beautiful as long as you have the right gear. Jess Perry was here to show us some of the new, must have items if you are going to hit the pavement in freezing or below temps!

1) Running Tights.
Look for ones that are stretchy, soft and warm on the inside but protective on the outside. Make sure they also have moisture-wicking material that is fast drying in case you get caught in a snowfall while you are out. A few great brands that we have today are CW-X, Under Armor and LuLu Lemon.

2) Running Jacket.
Most mornings you will want to layer. Once again, fabrics that are warm and protective that also have moisture-wicking material are best. A few that we are showing today are from Nike, Under Armor and LuLu Lemon. A vest can also be great to use as layering to keep the warmth in where it is necessary without over warming your arms.

3) Gloves.
Look for gloves that a dri-fit fabric outer layer. This is for enhanced moisture control. Also, comfort…gets ones that are comfortable. Nike, Under Armor and Brooks are brands that I love.

4) Socks.
Hands down the Smartwool socks are one of the warmest on the market. Sometimes you feel that you need to wear double…not with these. They are made from special wool that is soft and cozy to wear, yet very breathable. Just try them and you will not be disappointed.

5) Ear Warmers.
One thing that is going to be the most uncomfortable to be cold is our ears. It messes with our balance, gives us headaches and makes the whole time outside miserable. So cover them up! Once again you want a soft, wicking material that will keep you incredibly warm. Great brands to try are LuLu Lemon, Under Armor and Balconi.

6) Additional Warmers.
Hot hands…great to keep handy and shove in your gloves for those really cold days. Neck Warmers are also a good thing to have. You can either buy a specific neck warmer or take a scarf and wrap it around also.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure the fabric is breathable and warm and will allow for the best experience possible so you will want to do it again. And it helps if it is fun and bright and cute to wear. It will motivate you to put it back on also.

A few great races coming up that you can sport your new winter wear at are:

Thankful 13. This is the first and only half marathon to be held in the state. It is in Lehi and takes place mostly along the beautiful Jordan Parkway trail. This event also has a 5K and benefits Community Action Services & Food Bank. $5 off when you use the code PILGRAM. And for groups of 4 or more there will be a 30% discount. They offer a 10k race beginning at 7:30 a.m. and a 5k race beginning at 8 a.m., the event is a fun filled way to get together with friends and family while also helping out the Utah Food Bank.
